Permian (IRE)

Age: 3 (Foaled May 1st, 2014)

Sex: Bay Colt

Breeding: Teofilo (IRE) – Tessa Reef (IRE) (Mark of Esteem (IRE))

Trainer: M Johnston

Owner: Cheik Hbm Al Maktoum

Mark Johnston’s horse has already raced 6 times in 2017, so fatigue might become an issue for the Teofilo-sired colt sooner or later. 10th in the Epsom Derby, he was perhaps a little fortunate to win the King Edward VII Stakes last time out (runner-up Khalidi found trouble in-running) but Permian also won this season’s Dante Stakes and should be a major player in this contest.

Orderofthegarter (IRE)

Age: 3 (Foaled March 19th, 2014)

Sex: Bay Colt

Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – Kitty Kiernan (Pivotal)

Trainer: A P O’Brien

Owner: D Smith/mme J Magnier/m T

A comfortable winner of the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes, the Galileo-colt has twice since attempted to secure G1 honours in France – first at Deauville in the Essai Poulains Stakes and then at Chantilly, in the Prix Du Jockey Club. Orderofthegarter then finished runner-up behind the very-useful looking Bebatl, in the Hampton Court Stakes. There are plenty of those who doubt he is really capable of coming out on top in a G1 race, but this one looks far more winnable than most.

Venice Beach (IRE)

Age: 3 (Foaled March 25th, 2014)

Sex: Bay Colt

Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – Danedrop (IRE) (Danehill (USA))

Trainer: A P O’Brien

Owner: Smith/magnier/tabor/flaxm

Like Orderofthegarter, this is another Galileo colt that is trained by Aidan O’Brien. He only raced once as a 2-year-old and it wasn’t until April that his maiden tag was finally shed. He then beat Wings Of Eagles to take the Chester Vase, less than a month before his stablemate won the big one at Epsom although Venice Beach looked decidedly off-colour in the Derby himself – hanging left and weakening badly in the final furlong. It’s hard to know what to expect next from this one, but he might just be the value bet in this race.

The unfancied Spanish Steps is also trained by O’Brien, while the French contingent is headed by Mac Mahon, Parabellum, Ice Breeze and the Alain de Royer-Dupre-trained Shakeel who will be ridden by Christophe Soumillon.
