Thunder Snow Drops-In At Leicester

Tuesday’s UK meetings are at Leicester, Redcar, Towcester, Lingfield and Wolverhampton. The action at Leicester gets underway with a 6f contest for 2-year-olds (2.00) and the majority of runners will be on debut. Helmet’s offspring continue to create a huge amount of interest and much is expected of Saeed bin Suroor’s Thunder Snow. The dam is a half-sister to French Oaks winner, West Wind, so a victory first time out would be no real shock. However, Hugo Palmer’s Evergate holds a G1 entry and should benefit from his single outing at Newmarket. John Gosden’s Hyde Park (Oasis Dream) will be ridden by Frankie Dettori and his mother is a half-sister to the mighty Flintshire, so he’s an obvious danger.

The 7.55 at Redcar is a weak-looking handicap for amateur riders and Tom Greatrex can add to his growing reputation by landing the spoils on Compton River. The 4-year-old hung left at Catterick and would otherwise have got much closer to Under Approval. The switch to 6f should suit and the Compton Place gelding is preferred to both Giant Spark and Poolstock. Each-way value hunters may well take a punt on Ralph Smith’s Wattaboutsteve, a horse that is lightly raced and by no means exposed.

Penalty Needn’t Darken Dusk Till Dawn’s Horizons

Dusk Till Dawn faces a 7lb penalty, following victory at Newton Abbot last week, but David Pipe’s charge should be able to defy the hike and win again in the 3.40 at Towcester. Underfoot conditions should suit him down to the ground and the King’s Theatre gelding should have a bit too much in his locker for Upbeat Cobbler, whose record is chequered to say the least. Rebel Benefit won a weak contest at Huntingdon, but this is a much bigger ask.

Naafer will be expected to shed her maiden tag, without too much melodrama, in the 5.50 at Lingfield. She found only Grizzel too good, on debut at Sandown and that horse went on to notch again, so William Haggas will expect nothing less than victory today against a field that contains only one other runner with any experience. Lexington Sky has performed reasonably well, but on both outings failed to show any genuine pace when it really mattered. Surfina looks the most interesting of the debutants, although Dean Ivory’s all-weather record with 2-year-olds is not great.

Is He The Real Deal?

The 6.40 at Wolverhampton is a chance to see a 3-year-old colt, that could be a real start this season, for the very first time. Istiqlaal, trained by Charlie Appleby, cost 250,000gns and is closely related to Mount Nelson, a G1 winner. Sired by Oasis Dream and out of a dam called Independence, don’t be too surprised if this one makes a very big impression today. All of the other runners, barring Dasheen, have raced before and Tom Dascombe’s Mickey looks the one most likely to throw a custard-pie in the direction of Istiqlaal’s connections.

Pupil Kennedy Is A Class Act

There’s an evening meeting at Ballinrobe, over in Ireland, where the 8.30 looks like being the most exciting race. Draycott Place, Canaly, King Leon, Security Breach, Carriganog, Give Me A Break, Perfect Woman and The King Of Brega can all be expected to go fairly close, although He Is Top Class is the blog pick. Jack Kennedy is looking great value for his 3lb claim, right now and Donal Hassett’s charge looks to be on a very winnable mark.

Action In France & South Africa

There are 2 French meetings and the first to get underway is at Strasbourg. Richard Chotard’s Polo is likely to start the rich Prix de la Musique handicap as the clear favourite. The Prix de la Fédération is the feature at Toulouse, where Charly Malpic looks the one to beat. There are also 8 races at Kenilworth, in South Africa.
