Joy For Racing Fans, As July Meeting Gets Underway
There are UK meetings at Carlisle, Doncaster, Epsom and Newbury today, but the main action takes place at Newmarket. It’s day 1 of the July Meeting!
Saeed bin Suroor’s Prize Money should start the G3 Bahrain Trophy (2.10) as favourite. The Authorized colt was 2nd in both the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes and the G3 Tercentenary Stakes. Sir Michael Stoute’s Platitude is marginally preferred though. The Dansili gelding was 2nd in the King George V Stakes (Ascot) and Frankie Dettori will be on-board.
Ardad Can Maim Mehmas
The G2 July Stakes (2.40) should provide us with the best head-to-head battle of the afternoon. Richard Hannon’s Mehmas finished runner-up in the Coventry Stakes, after also finishing 2nd in the Listed National Stakes. John Gosden’s Ardad can maintain his unbeaten record, however and establish himself as one of the stars of the future. The Kodiac colt was mightily impressive, when winning the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes by over 3 lengths.
Gatsby Too Good
The Grey Gatsby is a notorious seasonal slow-starter, so a line can be drawn through his 4th place finish in the G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes. The 5-year-old has certainly been expensive to back, since winning the 2014 Irish Champion Stakes, but he can reward the faith of his many fans by winning the G2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes at 3.15. Exosphere and Second Step should push him all the way to the winning-post, though.
Crazy Horse Can Be The Chief
The Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes is at 5.30 and John Gosden’s Crazy Horse can return to winning ways, after being taken down a peg or two in the G1 Poule D’essai Poulains at Deauville. The Sleeping Indian colt previously won the G3 Horris Hill Stakes and should be too good for both Lumiere and Estidraak, if his confidence hasn’t taken too much of a battering.
No Dodgy Start, For Brooklyn This Time
There’s 7 races on the card at Leopardstown, where the opener (5.50) is a 7f encounter for juveniles. Brooklyn’s Rose overcame a poor start, when winning on debut at Fairyhouse and she’ll be expected to follow-up at the expense of both Pipes Of Peace and the unraced Radio Silence. There are 8 races at both Clairefontaine and Vaal.
