Lunch To Eat-Up The Giving Ground

The going remains soft on Day 3 of Royal Ascot and we have 6 more great races to look forward to, beginning with the G2 Norfolk Stakes (2.30). Global Applause has yet to win on ground any worse than good and Ed Dunlop’s runner is up against some useful sorts, today. Wesley Ward’s Red Lodge should run a big race, but Richard Hannon’s Legendary Lunch will relish the surface and can gain confidence from his narrow victory in the Woodcote Stakes. The Last Lion’s racing career appears to be going backwards before it has barely even started, though Mark Johnston’s colt is another that likes plenty of cut.

Time Test’s record-breaking display, in last season’s renewal of the G3 Tercentenary Stakes (3.05, today), was one of the highlights of Royal Ascot 2015. None of today’s hopefuls look likely to beat 2:03.05, certainly not in these conditions, but this one should be tremendously exciting. Abdon, Blue De Vega and Hawksbill all arrive in outstanding form, but Aidan O’Brien’s Long Island Sound might just maintain his 100% record with another win. He showed plenty of mettle, when holding-off Elusive Heights at Killarney and while untried on soft ground the War Front colt looks well worth a small punt at the price.

Architecture Can Build Upon Oaks Defeat

The G2 Ribblesdale Stakes (3.40) looks fairly competitive, but Architecture‘s form looks by-far the most solid and she’s taken to provide Hugo Palmer with yet another big success. While she would not have finished so close behind Minding in the Oaks, had Aidan O’Brien’s incredible filly not encountered trouble in running, Architecture went past the post 8-lengths ahead of Harlequeen. With Frankie Dettori on-board, she should be far too good for these and those that want to back her are advised to get their money on early.

The G1 Gold Cup (4.20) is Thursday’s feature and Aidan O’Brien will not be a happy man, if this one slips away. Order Of St George will be the banker of the day for many punters and it’s easy to see why.4 consecutive victories have included the G1 Irish St Leger and the Listed Saval Beg Stakes (on his 2016 reappearance, a fortnight ago). Any challenge is likely to come from Willie Mullins’ Max Dynamite, although the French 6-year-old appears held. It also looks as though Clever Cookie, great warrior that he is, has finally clocked-up too many miles.

Talented Tom Can Triumph

Races don’t come much more tricky for bettors, than today’s Britannia Stakes (5.00). Just about every horse has a chance of winning, but Richard Hannon’s Oh This Is Us definitely appeals – particularly with the brilliant Tom Marquand claiming 3lb. The Acclamation colt seeks a 4th straight victory, today, following a half-length defeat of Haalick at Goodwood. Predilection, Yattwee, Manson and Fighting Temeraire should also tempt each-way backers.

Today’s final Royal Ascot encounter is the King George V Stakes (5.35), another strong handicap. The Queen is still seeking her first Festival victory and looks like being denied here as others have stronger claims than Guy Fawkes. Primitivo and Shraaoh will be both plotting treason, although Charlie Appleby’s Lovell is the pick of the blog. The Dubawi colt held-on well to finish just half a length behind Stargazer at Sandown and the ground should present no real problem.

G3 Action, At Leopardstown

Racing is also scheduled at Ripon, Chelmsford, Ffos Las and Lingfield. There’s an excellent card at Leopardstown, where the G3 (Oliver Brady) Ballycorus Stakes (7.55) tops the bill. Kelinni is up against Gordon Lord Byron and Aidan O’Brien’s Dick Whittington. There are also meetings at Saint-Cloud, Craon and Turffontein.
