Massaat Must Prove Doubters Wrong
Thursdays British meetings are at Salisbury, Beverley, Worcester, Yarmouth and Stratford. Salisbury’s G3 Sovereign Stakes is at 4.10. Massaat has certainly been keeping a low profile, since disappointing in the G1 Epsom Derby. Few believed Owen Burrows’ inmate would get the trip and they were proved right. Today he has just a mile to face and should finally secure black-type. Zonderland looks the best of the rest.
Beverley’s 3.50 is a 2m handicap, in which Medina Sidonia will attempt to reward punters who have stuck with the Montjeu gelding. He’s not tasted victory for over a year, but has been knocking on the door recently and Rachel Richardson claims 3lb today.
The 3.00 at Worcester is a NH flat race for mares and it looks an open contest. David Pipe’s Poisoned Berry will be ridden by Tom Scudamore and the Scorpion filly just gets the nod over Black Sam and Lady Robyn.
Salsa Can Make Appleby Dance
A 2-year-old encounter gets matters underway at Yarmouth (5.05) and Charlie Appleby’s Salsabeel will be on-course for the first time. Sired by Exceed And Excel and out of Tokyo Rose, he already has a G1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes entry and much is expected of this well bred juvenile. Intrepidly and Merlin are also of interest and it will be a surprise if this race isn’t won by a debutant.
The final race at Stratford (8.20) is a 2m handicap hurdle and Tim Vaughan will have high-hopes for Makethedifference. The 8-year-old fell for the first time, back in December and hasn’t raced since. The Shantou gelding won twice in the Autumn, before that and can get back to winning ways this evening.
O’Brien’s Charge Set To Explode
An excellent card at Leopardstown features the G3 Desmond Stakes at 7.30. Cougar Mountain was last season’s winner and Aidan O’Brien can strike again with the brilliant Hit It A Bomb. The War Front colt won the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, last October and should be too good for today’s rivals if he’s in the mood.
