5 UK Meetings, On Redcar Gold Cup Day

Monday brings with it 5 UK meetings, at Cartmel, Huntingdon, Leicester, Redcar and Windsor.

The 4.10 at Cartmel is a Class 3 handicap chase, with 8 veteran runners going to post. Thomas Wild is unlikely to have made the long journey from Somerset, without Philip Hobbs’ belief that the 11-year-old can win with Richard Johnson on-board.

However, his charge concedes weight all-round and has yet to be tried at this venue. Rebecca’s Choice showed that he is back to his best, when winning the Norfolk National at Fakenham and looks the better bet.

If it’s top-quality racing you’re after, today’s meeting at Huntingdon is unlikely to quicken your blood. A handicap hurdle gets matters underway, at 12.30. Icanmotor, Moreece, Flamingo Beat, It’s Oscar, Tingo In The Tale and On Alberts Head all look in with a shout in a weak looking race that sets the tone for the afternoon in Cambridgeshire.

Great Expectations For Hughes’ Crusader

There’s much more to like about the card at Leicester, with some interesting 2-year-olds contesting the 2.10. It’s the first day at school for Richard Hughes’ Goodwood Crusader looks very well-bred and the booking of Ryan Moore suggests much is expected of the Sir Prancelot colt. Pretty Vacant impressed when finishing runner-up at Haydock, on debut and Roger Varian’s inmate arrives with by far the best-looking form.

Bounce, Madrinho, Tawdheef, Mont Kiara, Ejaazah and Sir Dudley all take on Henry Candy’s Bounce, in the 4.25. Last season’s renewal of this race was won by Magical Memory.

Revolutionist Can Turn Up Trumps

It’s Gold Cup day, at Redcar and Mark Johnston looks to have a decent chance of repeating his 2015 victory (which came via Fire Fighting) when the race starts at 3.25. Revolutionist made-all to win a comparable race at Headquarters and the 4lb rise seems more than fair.

Winter House lacks experience, but won on debut and did not disgrace himself when runner-up at Lingfield following a long break. Central Square should also go close, for Roger Varian, in what should be the race of the day.

Point Of Woods Back For Beckett

The 4.05 is the highlight at Windsor, a Class 2 handicap for 3-year-olds over 5 furlongs. The handicapper looks to have treated Field Of Vision somewhat harshly and a 13lb hike for placing in Listed company should put paid to his chances of a winning handicap debut. Both Lady Macapa and Discreet Hero look more likely winners, although the value bet may well be Ralph Beckett’s Point Of Woods. This one hasn’t been seen since October, a month during which he won at Wolverhampton and in reasonably good company.

Cherry To Come Out On Top?

There will be 7 races at Ballinrobe, with a good handicap hurdle for mares topping the bill at 7.00. This is a real chance for Cian Collins to grab the headlines, by following up an excellent win on-board Isabella Liberty last week. Runner-up, Josephine Marcus, was having her first outing for a year, so a reversal of the form would be no real surprise. Sweet Cherry is another danger, following some excellent performances recently including a win at Kilbeggan. This race should be tight.

Listed Action, In France

There’s a couple of French meetings to look forward to, with 8 races on the card at Cagnes-Sur-Mer. Better quality can be found at Maisons-Laffitte, however, where Dalshand looks the one to beat in the Listed Prix Matchem.

Doctorow is amongst the runners taking part in the Kimberley Classic, one of 9 races at Flamingo Park (South Africa) today.
