Monday Off To A Bang, With 5 Meetings

We hope that you aren’t exhausted, following an incredible weekend of racing, as there are 5 UK meetings to feast upon today!

A 3-year-old 5f sprint gets the ball rolling at Brighton (2.10). Dominance represents Rae Guest and the filly already has a polytrack win to her name. Apprentices Louis Steward and Rob Hornby both get another chance to showcase their skills. Steward rides Sir Theodore, while Hornby partners Entertaining Ben.

Just 3 juveniles will contest the 2.40,. Secret Ballerina looks well-held, but strong cases can be made for Martin Lane’s Kody Ridge and Clive Cox’s Mister Sunshine. The latter of those two looks the most promising, after finding only Berkshire Boy too good on debut.

7 maidens will line-up for the 2.30 at Kempton, like plain girls against the wall at a disco when the slow songs start playing. Fair Flora races for the first time, over hurdles, so gets a pass. Maid Of Milan can strut her stuff, at the 4th time of asking. The 5-year-old mare kept on stoutly at Doncaster and may well have won at Fontwell, if she hadn’t jumped to the right so dramatically 3 from home. Hollow Bay looks the best of the rest. A runner-up at both Sandown and Ludlow, she lost her way somewhat towards the end of her last race at Fontwell and can do better.

Rebecca’s Prayers For Clergyman

There’s a tasty looking handicap at Redcar (3.55) and Rebecca Bastiman will be looking to end a long and frustrating run without a victory. Clergyman put in an eye-catching late surge, at Thirsk in April, despite being off the track for 18 months. Others that appeal include Soul Brother, Olivia Fallow, Grand Beauty, Jebediah Shine and Long Awaited.

Mark Johnston’s Alwalaa should get off the mark, at the 2nd time of asking, in the 6.10 at Leicester. The 2-year-old Elzaam filly didn’t really get anywhere near the winner (Twizzell), when on debut at Beverley, but she showed few signs of greenness when finishing a creditable 3rd. The unraced Broadhaven Honey appears to have the soundest pedigree, of those having their first day at school.

Cape Of Good Hope, For Hughes

Richard Hughes should be quietly confident that Cape Discovery can get the better of Barwick, in the 8.00 at Windsor. The Shamardal gelding shed his maiden tag, on the Dundalk polytrack, before scoring at the expense of Elysian Prince at Windsor a fortnight ago. The 3lb rise is unlikely to be a problem, for this progressive looking horse. Victoria Pollard is another that looks unexposed.

Gordon’s Got Game

The G3 Laurels Chase (7.20) tops the bill, at Killarney, where Gordon Elliott will be desperate to secure a black-type victory. The Game Changer won a trio of races at this level, back in 2015, but was frustrated in G1 company at both Aintree and Punchestown. Neither result was really a surprise, with Douvan involved, but Elliott can take heart that only Willie Mullins’ superstar got the better of his charge in both encounters. Vinconte Du Noyer and Clarcam both have class, although probably not enough to trouble The Game Changer who looks good value even at odds-on.

Hawksmoor Swoops Into Deauville

The really serious action takes place at Deauville, though, where spectators will be eagerly anticipating the renewal of the G1 Saint-alary. Frankie Dettori will be on-board Hawksmoor, winner of the G1 Dubai Fillies’ Mile. The duo are taken to narrowly beat the impressive Camprock, who will be ridden by Mickael Barzalona. Jamie Spencer will be on top of Restiana and also Sir Maximilian in the Listed Prix de Saint-Georges.

South African racing fans can look forward to 9 encounters at Flamingo Park.
