Haley Fits The Bill

Today’s UK meetings are at Doncaster, Yarmouth, Cartmel, Chester, Newcastle and Newmarket. Haley Bop can defy a 6lb hike and get the better of Nimr and Hornsby in the 3.45 at Doncaster. Mark Johnston’s inmate won a valuable fillies and mares’ handicap, at Musselburgh earlier this month.

The 4.30 at Yarmouth is a Class 2 handicap, over a mile. Belgian Bill’s return is interesting, but both the weather and the handicapper’s wielding of the stick are concerns. Light And Shade’s win at Ascot, last time out in May, proved this horse can win from a held-up position and the booking of Jamie Spencer can only boost the filly’s chances of following-up.

Walk In The Park, For Sam?

Cartmel also has a Class 2 event, at 4.40, a 2m 1f handicap hurdle. Dexcite, Mardale, Dynamic Drive, Good of Luck and Altruism, but Ash Park is the blog’s tentative selection. The course and distance winner steps up in grade, but the talented Sam Coltherd claims 7lb and Ash Park was impressive when beating Nautical Nitwit at Hexham on Sunday.

The best race on what looks a fairly mediocre card, at least by Chester’s standards, looks to be the 7.35 – a handicap for fillies. Sharja Queen can put a disappointing showing in the 1,000 Guineas behind her and score on her handicapping debut for Roger Varian. She previously stayed on well to beat Lightsome at Ffos Las. Sightline is unexposed and a big danger.

Stoute’s Hoppings Hope

There’s Listed action at Newcastle and again it’s female horses taking centre-stage. The Hoppings Stakes is at 7.45 and Varian will be hoping to land this one as well with Nezwaah. She finished 3rd in a recent Listed encounter at Newbury, but Sir Michael Stoute’s Intimation is slightly preferred, based on her victories at Nottingham and Leicester.

The 6.20 at Newmarket looks to be all about the debutants and Richard Hannon’s Fabric is the most-intriguing. She’s an Acclamation filly, out of a dam called Decorative and can notch at the first time of asking with Ryan Moore on-board. Bouquet De Flores, Tisbutadream and Spiritual Lady should all combine to make this juvenile contest very-interesting.

Followers of young jockeys can look forward to the Apprentice Derby, at the Curragh this evening (7.00). The power of the O’Brien family will be very-much on display, with both Arya Tara and Udogo likely to dominate the betting. Value hunters might want to take a look at Pincode, who will be ridden by Gary Halpin, as an each-way angle. The gelding finished 4th in her last Curragh appearance and there’s a lot to like about the form from that contest. Meetings are also taking place at La Teste de Buch and Fairview.
