Hope Springs Eternally
There are 5 UK meetings to look forward to on Wednesday. The Listed ‘Eternal’ Fillies’ Stakes is at 4.10 (Carlisle) and the aptly-named Eternally can maintain her 100% record and win for John Gosden. She was a little keen, when beating Pure Art at Nottingham, but should settle into her running a lot better today and prove too good for both Opal Tiara and Red Box.
There’s a rich handicap at Salisbury (4.50) and Next Stage looks to have been treated generously. The Dubawi colt was beaten 2 lengths by Defrocked, at Doncaster, but that horse went on to win the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot. Palawan is one for each-way backers, with Ryan Moore on-board.
Jimmy Set To Take-Off!
Jimmy The Jetplane can defy top-weight and land the 2.50 at Worcester, a 2m 7f handicap chase. A winner at Wincanton (twice) and Ludlow, last year, he should benefit from his outing at Uttoxeter and just about see off Jonjo O’Neill’s Easy Street. David Noonan is in terrific form, so keep an eye on Horace Hazel who makes his chasing debut today.
The 7.40 at Bath is for novice fillies and it’s very hard to look beyond William Haggas’ Seed Corn. Sired by Exceed And Excel, she was runner-up on debut to Ardad at Yarmouth. Ardad was mightily-impressive when landing the Windsor Castle Stakes (Royal Ascot) a week later and Seed Corn should soon be running in races of a much higher grade.
Mailshot Can Lick Opposition
Another Exceed And Excel horse will be making his first appearance, in the 8.20 at Kempton. Elementary is owned by Her Majesty the Queen, but it’s Mark Johnston’s Mailshot who can stamp his authority on this encounter. The form of the Hard Spun colt appeals more than Tibr’s, who disappointed at Epsom – albeit in Listed company. Prerogative looks more of a threat, but Mailshot should just about hold sway.
The big race at Naas is the Listed Oaks Trial (7.30) and it’s another chance to see Dermot Weld’s exciting filly, Discipline, in action. A winner on debut at Gowran Park, she returned to the Kilkenny course and finished 2nd to Bocca Baciata in the Listed Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes.
G1 Action, At Chantilly
There’s a terrific card at Chantilly, where Brama De Pompadour takes on Aicha De Monlau in the G1 atar Coupe De France Des Chevaux Arabes. There are 4 black-type races in all. Scottsville is today’s sole South Africa meeting.
