RaceBets Channel 4 Preview, Saturday 29th Oct 2016

If you wanted proof that winter was upon us then this Saturdays racing card says it in spades. Our first entire jumps racing fixture list with the feature race the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby.

1:35 WETHERBY racinguk.com Chase (A Novices´ Limited Handicap) Cl3 1m7f36y

Martin Keighley’s, Solstice Star has run to a consistently high mark and his second last season to Mister Miyagi at Cheltenham was a good run. He may, however, struggle to concede 5lbs to Double W’s, who has the benefit of a run as well. Malcolm Jefferson’s horse looks an improver and was an easy winner last time out at Carlisle. On this quicker ground he can be backed with confidence.

1:55 ASCOT Ascot Underwriting Chase (A Novices´ Limited Handicap) Cl3 2m2f175y

This is an open contest with a case to be made for each horse. It’s probable that this is a bit hot for Remind Me Later but he is the only one we have put a line through. Emma Lavelle has her team in good early season order and Crimsom Ark has run well twice so far and if taking to fences could be a danger. Thomas Crapper is very frustrating and we feel this may all happen just a bit quick for a horse we back regularly, the fact that we haven’t in this race might be a tip in itself!!. Paul Nichols has San Benedeto and whilst his first run over fences was inauspicious, his trainer didn’t hesitate to throw him in at the deep end so he must figure. That leaves us with Ballbolley and Master Dee, both of whom won last time out and have shown that fencing is no problem for them. Nigel Twiston Davies seems to have his string in great nick and so we will plump for his charge.

2:10 WETHERBY olbg.com Mares´ Hurdle (Listed Race) Cl1 2m

Seven horses line up in this race and 5 of them have a realistic chance of success. Miss Crick looks the most progressive, for Alan King and her recent Worcester success shows she is better than ever. Pass the Time was good at Stratford but fluffed her lines at Newton Abbott. She will have to be back to her best to win this but at her best she could. Ben Case’s, Midnight Jazz has places chances and a win could happen but only if those more fancied don’t perform. Card Game may well have shown all she has to offer, as honest as that is. The improver looks to be Miss Crick and she is our strong selection

2:25 ASCOT Byrne Group Handicap Chase (Listed Race) Cl1 2m192y

Jonjo O’Neil hasn’t hit top form yet and Festive Affair would have to improve a bit to win this. It’s also possible that Noche De Reyes has developed as far as he is going to over fences. Johnny Farrelly’s All Together was a decent second at Fakenham last time out but has to get back to his Leicester form, which was on heavier ground, to take a hand in this race. Ulck Du Lin is good enough but may well need the run and Croco Bay hasn’t looked the same horse that won in August at Worcester. We have always believed that Germany Calling was better than he had shown and

Charlie Longsdon agreed when we interviewed him recently at Bangor after his horses win. He said he needs good ground and the positive tactics seemed to work. He is our selection

2:45 WETHERBY bet365 Hurdle (Registered as the West Yorkshire Hurdle) (Grade 2) Cl1 3m26y

We are huge fans of Lil Rockerfeller. He is incredibly brave and definitely worth a try at 3 miles. If it suits he could be something to follow at this distance but with Ballyoptic in the field he will have to get every yard of the journey. If In Doubt has taken on the best and won but he may just need the run. Native River is top draw over fences as a Novice and has a try over the smaller obstacles as his pipe opener, seems fair enough. Silsol is another who has loads of ability. It’s a good staying hurdle with lots of chances. Let’s side with the Tizzard horse for a bit of value. He is good enough to win this.

Dan Skelton’s horse Ch’Tibello has to give weight all round but he just might be an improver of which the same could be said for the four year old Diego Du Charmil. His latest win was a very good one and he may rate a lot higher going forward. Sternrubin is capable of some big figures and is so tough when on form and he can do it first time out. Can he do it off this new mark? He was convincingly beaten by the Skelton horse in his latest run. The worry for us is Cloonacool. He has the right style of racing to enjoy this contest and he shouldn’t be out of the first three.

3:20 WETHERBY bet365 Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2) Cl1 3m45y

We have made a lot of money backing Cue Card over the years and it’s tough to bypass him in this race. He normally strips fit first time out and he is the best horse in this race on what we have seen so far. Only a newcomer at this level could lower his colours if he gets round and that would have to be the very brave Blaklion, who gets 7lbs but then needs to improve another half a stone as well to trouble Cue Card. It’s only these two that can win, on paper and we have to go with the favourite but a forecast could pay well

3 units win Cue Card

3:35 ASCOT Sodexo Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) Cl1 2m7f180y

Lizzie Kelly has struck up quite a relationship with Tea for Two and she will be keen to see him perform over a trip that he hasn’t convinced over just yet. He may well. Saphir Du Rheu has an easier task than some he has been set but he will need to be at his jumping best to win this. Hadrians Apporoach would like a searching test to be seen at this best as would A Good Skin for Tom George. Our fancy is ridden by the best Jockey in the UK currently – Noel Fehily and trained by Harry Fry. It is Voix D’Eau, whose 3rd last time out will have put him spot on for this contest and he has the class to win and the stamina to see it out.

2 units e/w Voix D’Eau
