There is a very good horse racing scene in New Zealand, as well as many successful breeders. Kiwi horses have had a great deal of success, both at home and across the Pacific region.
It is also a country with a very interesting racing culture and there is no better place to explore this than at the Otaki-Maori Racing Club. Of all the racing clubs in the country, this is the only one that is truly Maori. Many regard it as the one truly indigenous racing organisations that are operating throughout the world.
Early Events
Maoris have been racing thoroughbred horses since around 1840. Early events would often take place on the banks of the Otaki River. There were no financial purses and the prizes were made up of the goods that Maoris traded.
The race meetings resembled festivals and people would come from many miles away to have fun and enjoy the action. This included a small number of Europeans, although around 95% of the crowd (which could number as many as 4000) would have been Maoris.
The Otaki Racing Club
The also used to be a racing club that was run by Europeans, in the late nineteenth century. Known as the Otaki Racing Club, it was beset by problems and does not seem to have been very well run. The track was in a very poor condition and spectators had to make do with only seeing the horses as they came into the finishing straight. This organisation closed down after seven short and difficult years.
Hoani Taipua and Henry Eager
For around 20 years, the Otaki-Maori Racing Club used a venue at Rikiriki, but they too encountered problems (mainly with getting the lease that they needed. However, they continued to battle on and the club was widely held to have been well run. Hoani Taipua and Henry Eager are two individuals credited with building a solid foundation for the club to prosper. They adopted a policy of recruiting a large number of stewards. There were up to fifty of these working for them in the late nineteenth century (many in an honorary capacity), many more than there are today.
