Racing At Madras
Madras races are regarded as being some of the most exciting in India and the Madras Race Club has a long and distinguished history. When you enter the course, you will see the famous iron horseshoe which hangs at the main-gate. The venue has aged gracefully and has the feel of a comfortable armchair.
History
Racing here can be dated from around 1780 when a large number of small land-plots were gifted by the government in order to create a proper horse racing facility.
However, it would be another 60 years before the sport was officially constituted here. In the early years, meetings took place on an irregular basis and there were a number of fallow periods. It took a while before things were properly organised, but eventually two tracks were built – one for training and the other for horse racing.
Royal Visit
Following a visit by Edward VII, who was then a young man and still just the Prince of Wales, the club enjoyed a boost in attendance numbers. In the few years that had preceded the visit there were fears that it would not really get off the ground, as hoped. This led to the formation of the Madras Race Club as it is known today.
It is the oldest racecourse in India and recently reached its bicentennial year. The lodge and the weighing-room were added in the 1930s and in the mid-1960s the Madras Racing Club was fully recognised as a turf authority that was truly independent. Before this happened, the Calcutta Turf Club had control of Madras.
The Madras Classics
There are five Madras races that are regarded as Classics, which shows what an important venue this is. Madras has had to deal with a number of setbacks over the years, The Indian government banned horse racing in the 1970s. Incredibly, the club fought this decision through the courts and the sport continued. A decade later, the government took over racing but the Madras Race Club held together and thrives to this day.
