Racing At Macau

Horse racing, in it’s present form, has been taking place at Macau for 25 years. It comes under the stewardship of the Macau Jockey Club. More than 1000 people work for this organisation and 500 of those are stable hands. This makes it one of the biggest employers in the whole of Macau.

One of the best things about the racing scene in Macau is that the season never really comes to an end. It begins in September, runs through until August, and then just starts again! Every week, there will be a couple of meetings taking place. The friday night-meeting is a regular fixture and there will also be a day or evening meeting held at the weekend.

They are particularly fond of sprint races and most contests are run over just 1100 metres or 1200 metres. There are no races over 2000 metres and the majority are much shorter. A great deal of technology has been installed at the venue and the stewards are meticulous about standards and transparency.

At any time, there will be well over 500 horses in training at Macau. They are not just local horses and have been sent from all over the world. However, whether the horse is from USA, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Australia, or wherever, it will have been purchased by a member of the Macau Jockey Club, using the private purchasing scheme that members have access to.

Facilities

The stabling area is vast and has stalls for well over a thousand animals. They are fully air-conditioned and the horses are very well looked after there. There is also a large quarantine facility and a riding school. There is even a retirement zone, for horses that no longer race. There are five full-time vets and the equipment that they have to hand is all state-of-the-art. There is also a very large swimming-pool for the horses.

There are two tracks in the shape of an oval and the outer circumference is one mile. There are both sand and turf tracks, both of which are used for racing and training. Anybody making the trip to Macau should take time out to visit and appreciate the fantastic racing facility that has been built there. It really is a model for how racing should be run.
