Racing At Kolkata
Kolkata Racecourse has a long history and racing can be traced-back to the eighteenth century. The early fixtures were held in the Garden Reach and Akra areas. Facilities at Akra were certainly very basic. The course was roughly marked-out and only 4 horses were able to compete in any race. As the track was conveniently placed next to the Hugle River, both the horses and spectators enjoyed the breeze that came from across the water. It gave some relief from the relentless Indian sun!
The Bengal Jockey Club
Due to widely unpopular reforms made by Lord Wellesley, racing ground to an abrupt halt in 1798. No further action took place until the Bengal Jockey Club was formed – an organisation that was created to bring back racing at this venue. This resulted in the facility being moved to nearby Maidan and it is here that racing now takes place.
The Bengal Jockey Club had strong ties with England and members were able to call upon European know-how (racing in England had already been established for many years). A tradition was quickly established, whereby races would be held in the morning before everyone would sit down to enjoy a huge and well-deserved breakfast!
Early Races
A stand was built and the local press began to publish the racing results. The races tended to be between two and three miles in length. Horses had to complete various heats, so runners that lacked stamina would soon be found-out.
The Calcutta Turf Club
A brand-new course was created in 1812 and the Calcutta Turf Club was formed in 1847. This institution took responsibility for the regulation of racing matters and elections to the club were held by ballot. A committee comprising five members was formed and it was supported by 5 stewards. The sound decisions that were taken during these years proved to be very fruitful and, within forty years, the Calcutta Turf Club had the honour of administering all horse racing that took place in India (apart from the western region of the country).
