Finding An On-Course Bookmaker

When you visit a racecourse, you will always find a number of on-course bookmakers who will be happy to take your bets. The number that will be present depends very much on the size of the meeting. If you are going to a very important meeting, such as Cheltenham or Royal Ascot, there will be a lot of on-course bookmakers there.

However, if it is not such a prestigious meeting, there may well be very few. Remember that it is expensive for the bookmaker to pay ground-rent and to set up the stand with staff. If only a couple of hundred people are going to attend the race, there is little reason for many bookmakers to be there.

Time Concerns

Even if there are plenty of on-course bookmakers at the track, you may find that the queues are long on a busy race-day. There may be tens of thousands of people looking to bet and some of those will be betting very large sums of money. It is understandable, therefore, that bookmakers aren’t going to want to spend much time dealing with you if you are just looking to bet a few pounds on each race.

If you want to make a bet, first you need to look at all of the prices that are being displayed on each bookie’s electronic board. These prices are changing all of the time. The price that you like might not be available by the time you get to the front of the queue.

Placing Your Bet

However, making the bet is very simple. Just tell the bookmaker how much you want to bet and also make sure that you tell them that you want to take the price on offer. Otherwise, the bookmaker might assume you want to just take the starting-price and this may well be lower than the price that is on offer.

The bookmaker will then process your bet and give you a receipt. Make sure that you keep this receipt, or you may have difficulty in claiming your winnings if your horse wins the race!
