Royal Ascot Dress Code

The Royal Ascot Dress Code is something that all visitors to the festival need to be aware of. Failing to understand and follow the rules may result in spectators being denied access to certain parts of the racecourse, if not all of it.

The first thing to point out is that you cannot wear clothing that is promoting anything, so avoid any garments with printed text, or embroidered lettering. Fancy-dress is also not allowed. Turning up in a Batman costume is not the done thing! That sort of attire is only associated with stag-nights and heavy drinking. You will not be allowed in!

Ascot Silver Ring and Heath Enclosure

If you are just planning to enter the Silver Ring and Heath Enclosure, you are unlikely to encounter problems. The official line is that smart clothing is merely encouraged. However, it is important to remember that a day at Ascot races is a big event for most people in attendance. They want it to be a glamorous affair and may feel disappointed, or even a little angry, that some people haven’t made an effort. Do dress smartly, if you want to enjoy your day and be made to feel welcome by everybody at the racecourse.

Ascot Grandstand Dress Code

Grandstand admission involves much stricter rules, particularly for ladies. A hat must be worn at all times, so make sure that yours is comfortable, as well as chic! If you don’t have a suitable hat, you can wear a fascinator. Many women do this, so don’t panic if you can’t afford an expensive creation.

Dresses must not be strapless and sheer clothing is also not allowed. Trousers can be worn, but they must be full-length. Shorts or capri-pants are not acceptable.

You can wear a jacket, but the clothing you have on underneath must adhere to the dress-code. This will be checked, if you arrive in a buttoned up jacket! Your tummy/midriff must remain covered, so don’t wear any kind of crop-top.

The guidelines for girls, aged 17 and under, is the same as for women. However, headgear is not compulsory.

Overall, the best thing to do is to turn up wearing a classically-tailored dress, a pair of elegant heels and a hat. You are going to feel a lot more comfortable if your whole outfit matches and is both fashionable and chic. People will be watching you, just as you will be watching them. If this makes you uncomfortable, then Ascot probably isn’t for you!

Gentlemen must wear a suit with a shirt and tie. While the written-rules go no further than that, the expectation is for men to wear morning-wear – a three-piece grey or black suit, with a matching top hat.

Ascot Royal Enclosure Dress Code

If you are fortunate enough to be granted access to the Royal Enclosure, then formal day-wear is a must for ladies. Hems must fall just above the knee, or further down. Matching trouser-suits are acceptable. Fascinators are not!. You must wear a headpiece with a base of at least ten centimetres. Essentially, you are going to have to buy a proper hat. Gentlemen must wear full morning-dress, with a tie. Cravats are not allowed.
