Donald McCain Blog – Weekend Runners

Donald McCain

We had a slightly unlucky day yesterday as Artichoke Heart got chinned late on and Craig Star looked to be travelling like a winner when he fell but these things happen and we look forward to the weekend, where we have six runners.

On Saturday I run four horses at Kelso and I’m excited to get Pogue back in action and then on Sunday we go to Aintree where we have had some great days. I’d say we have a few live chances over the weekend and you can read all my thoughts on the runners below:

Saturday

Pogue
Track: Kelso – 1:15
Jockey: Brian Hughes

Obviously, he ran a couple of nice races last season and we are going to be heading chasing very soon but he’s ready to start back and there wasn’t a suitable chase. He’s not a real hurdle horse but he should run well and we make plans from there.

The Herds Garden
Track: Kelso – 3:35
Jockey: Brian Hughes

He won up there the last and although this is a good bit more competitive, he’s in good nick and he should run his race again.

Middlebrow

Middlebrow
Track: Kelso – 4:10
Jockey: Brian Hughes

He’s a funny horse that has very good days and some very bad days. He wouldn’t want too much rain up tere os we have reached for the blinkers to see if it makes any difference. If the blinkers work then he’d have a chance in a weak-looking affair.

Handy Hollow
Track: Kelso – 4:40
Jockey: Lorcan Murtagh

He’s a tough hardy consistent little handicapper that has a live chance but wouldn’t want too much rain.

Sunday

Same Circus
Track: Aintree – 1:15
Jockey: Theo Gillard

I think she’s probably not that well-handicapped over hurdles or fences to be honest but less so over hurdles. So this was the only real starting point for her. She stays, has won a lot of races but may need some help from the handicapper.

Constancio
Track: Aintree – 2:25
Jockey: Brian Hughes

It’ll be nice to see how he runs a nice big fair track like Aintree which he hasn’t got since Doncaster last year. Two and a half should be ok for him and he’s been running solidly of late. The only concern would be that he wants the ground to stay on the nice side.

Best Chance: Pogue
