The Hipodromo Chile can be found in Independencia. The course was first opened in 1904 and is one of two courses in Santiago. Created by a large group of supporters, breeders and owners, it is regarded as being one of the most important racing venues in the country.
The track is triangular-shaped and runs left-handed. This is a dirt surface and just over a mile in length. Racing takes place here every Saturday, as well as on the majority of Thursdays.
Important races that are held here, or have been recently, include the Seleccion de Velocistas, the St Leger, the Haras de Chile, the Alberto Solari Magnasco, the Independencia, the Gran Criterium Mauricio Serrano, the Dos Mil Guineas, the Mil Guineas, the Domingo Segundo Herrera and the GP Criadores Salvador Hess.
Also, the Gran Premio Criadores, the Fernando Moller Bordeu, the Pedro del Rio Talavera, the Tanteo de Potrillos, the Tanteo Potrancas, the Gran Premio de Honor and the Gran Premio Hipodromo Chile.
Chile’s Most Historic Venue
The other major Santiago racing venue is the Hipico de Santiago. This historic course was opened in 1870 and is the oldest track in the country. The circumference of the track is approximately one and a half miles.
It has extensive width and the horses run right-handed. Visitors often describe it as amongst the most beautiful in South America. There are landscaped gardens, ponds and fountains. It is regularly used as a venue for pop concerts and rock festivals – often with attendances of more than 30,000 people.
You will find a regular Friday meeting here, as well as irregular meetings on Mondays and Sundays. Major races, past and present, include the Gran Clasico Coronacion Entel, the Velocidad, the Oaks, the Ensayo, the Nacional Ricardo Lyon, the Polla de Pontrancas, the Polla de Potrillos, the Copa de Oro, the Criadores Dorana and the Criadores.
Also, the Arturo Lyon Pena, the Francisco Baeza, the Alberto Vial Infante, the Club Hipico de Santiago (Falabella), the Carlos Campino and the Verano (Arturo Cousino).
British Influence
The Valparaiso Sporting Club can be located in Vina del Mar, which is in the Valparaiso district. Opened in 1882, it’s founding members were mainly British-born. The Chilean Derby has been held here for over 125 years. Crowds of over 75,000 spectators are not unusual for Derby Day.
As it’s name indicates, this is more of a sports complex than just a racetrack. Other sports, such as rugby, football and cricket are played across the Valparaiso’s sprawling acres. As for the track itself, it is a left-hander and around 2000m in length.
Other Tracks
