Channel 4 Horse Racing Tips, Sat 23rd July 2016

Here are our Channel 4 racing tips for Saturday, 23rd July.

Another great Saturday of racing with Ascot and York taking centre stage on Channel 4.

2:45 Ascot Princess Margaret Juddmonte Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) Cl1 6f

We are ignoring How and that could be costly as Aiden O’Brien is ignored at your peril but his 2yo has won nothing and although the good ground may well help it would need to help a lot. He does however no the relative form of the principles as his Roly Poly beat both Kilmah and Magical Fire last time out and he isnt dodging this battle. That may be a clue in itself. After these three you need to look at the Lady Aurelia form and decide – is she a world beater and if you answer yes then the relative form of Kocollada and Kachess might look stronger but its possible that Frankles daughter, Fair Eva might be too strong for all of them having only run once and impressed at Haydock. It’s also possible that Marie of Lyon was found out by the combination of a stiffer trip and soft ground last time out and that she might prove very useful as well. An intriguing contest. Lets back two against a quality field.

3:00 York (Handicap) Cl2 7f

Everything you would expect from a Saturday 7f handicap at this time of year, except maybe the number of runners. Three that are of interest are Calder Prince, Tom Dascombe’s 4 yo, who ran a good race over a trip too short at Chester and has won over 7f and looks talented. Free Code for David Barron who was just touched off over 7f at Newmarket and has dropped to an attractive mark. His trainer hasnt hit his straps yet but this may be the start of it and finally Swift Approval for Kevin Ryan whose latest win shows the great heart the Ryan horses are in. Its possible that Free Code is a winner without a penalty so he is the selection

1 unit e/w Free Code

3:20 Ascot Handicap Cl2 1m

Von Blucher for Johns Gosden and Ryan Moore was hit hard for his win last time out with a 7lb rise and whilst that seems harsh he may be good enough. He has the legs of Manson and Perkunas, despite the rise in weight. Sir Roderic bids to make it a 4 timer and Rod Millmans 3yo gelding is progessive but has to improve again in a better race and at the bottom of the handicap we can make quite a case for Pirouette and Hughie Morrison putting up yet another Saturday winner.  We will gamble on further improvement from the filly at what appears too big a price.

1 unit e/w Pirouette

3:35 York Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 1m2f88y

This Group 2 race is a little easier to read. Mondialiste has been successful here before but doesnt look like he is ready to win this just yet. We may be wrong and he will win this calibre of race this year just like he did travelling abroad last year. Perhaps not today. Air Pilot is a very good horse and Ralph Becketts yard are doing what Paul Nichols does on Saturdays in the jump season and mopping up all the televised races but the Gosden runner Mahsoob has lowered his colours and 10 furlongs looks ideal for him but for us they are all playing second fiddle to the class horse in the race, who has his ground ,trip and course to show his best. That is Time Test who lost nothing in defeat to Hawkbill as was shown recently, on ground he wouldn’t have enjoyed and he has nothing of that class to beat here. This is our nap for today but somehow we think the bookmakers may know this

5 units win Time Test

3:55 Ascot  Gigaset Int’l Stakes (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 7f

Mutawathea ran well for a long way last time out and Simon Crisford has made a great start to his training career. This is within his charge’s grasp. Suzi’s Connoisseur is enigmatic but if he starts on terms then he will be a handful. Richard Fahey appears to have won almost every race on a Saturday recently that Ralph Beckett hasn’t and Nuno Tristan is very tempting in this race with what is an appealing profile. The other real temptation is the handicap mark of Lincoln whose 5th last time out captures the eye almost as much as his current rating. Price sometimes dictates a bet and this one sees us backing two horses that look bigger in price than their ability deserves.

1 unit e/w Nuno Tristan
1 unit e/w Lincoln

4:10 York  Dash Stakes (Handicap) Cl2 6f

We love our sprints and this race is no exception. Ninjago is better than he has shown recently and Paul Midgley’s horses are now running well. He will get a goo tune from the top weight. Kimberella deserves a win for Dandy Nichols after an amazing run of places in top sprints but it’s possible this may not go to plan either. Tanzeel drops to 6f for Charles Hills and that may be just what this horse needs, a fast run flat 6f. Intisaab and Cornwallville are interesting as is Lexington Abbey, just touched off in a good sprint last time out.

1 unit e/w Ninjago
1 unit e/w Tanzeel

4:30 Ascot  King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored by Qipco) (British Champions Series) (Group 1) Cl1 1m4f

The feature of the day and it could be that Her Royal Highness brings home a race she would dearly love to win. She even has the services of French Ace, Olivier Peslier to show the Brexiteers a 2 fingered salute, well done Your Majesty. Highland Reel for Aiden would dearly love to reverse placings from Royal Ascot  but that may prove harder to do this time around and Johns Gosdens Western Hymn tries 12 for only the second time in his career. The first being a poor one in the Derby. Forget that run, he will stay 12 and may prove the party spoiler at a huge price in a top notch race. In reality it’s a two horse race and we see no reason for the places to be altered

4 units e/w Dartmouth
1/2 unit e/w Western Hymn
