The Basics Of Betting On Horses

Many people want to create their own betting account, but are unsure of how to make wagers on horse races. What is the betting procedure? How do you place a bet? What do all of the odds mean? How do you claim your winnings, when the horse has won?

Selecting A Race

The first thing you need to do is to look at the race card of the event you were interested in making a bet on. For example, if the Epsom Derby was running, later today, you would search through today’s meetings (you will find all of today’s meetings in the left-hand column) and select Epsom.

You will then be presented with a list of all Epsom races, that are taking place today. Click on the Derby and the race card will appear. Now you can see all of the runners and riders. A the very-top of the race card is all of the information about the race itself. This includes the distance, the surface, the going, the purse and more.

Further down, you will see the name of each horse and the silks to be worn by each jockey. On the right-hand side of the race card, you can see the fixed-odds prices for each horse. Fixed-odds means that if you take the price, you are guaranteed to be paid out at these odds – even if the horse’s price shortens after you have made your bet. This is because RaceBets offers ‘Best Odds Guaranteed’, on all UK races.

Making Your Bet

Before you make your bet, let us explain how the prices work. If a horse is priced at 5/1, you will be paid-out £5 in winnings, for every £1 that you bet. So, if you bet £10 on that horse (and it wins), you would get back £50 in winnings. Your £10 stake will also be returned.

Some prices are a little trickier to work out, like 11/4 and 15/8. When you create a RaceBets account, you will be able to switch between fractional and decimal odds. Decimal odds are really easy to understand. If a horse is priced at 7.0, you just get a total of £7 back for £1 you bet. Even complicated shorter prices are easy to work out. If a horse is priced at 1.36, you will get back £1.36, for every £1 that you bet.

Creating Your Account

If you now feel that you understand decimal odds, create your RaceBets account and then click on the cog-tab (your settings). Change to decimal odds and you are now ready to bet, as soon as you have made your first deposit.

The fixed-odds for each horse will now show up as a decimal figure, in the fixed-odds column. If you like the price, of any runner, click to select. You will be asked to confirm your bet. Once that is done, your bet is on.

You do not need to claim a winning bet. Your winnings will be automatically credited to your account, including any bonuses. You can contact us in customer support, if there is anything you are unsure about.
