The Champ de Mars Racecourse is the most famous and historic track in Mauritius. It is over two hundred years old (having only recently celebrated its bicentenary) and was founded at the same time as the Mauritius Turf Club. The venue is in Port Louis and no other racing club in the Southern Hemisphere is as old. Sir Robert Townsend Farquhar was the man responsible for launching the club. He was the first British Governor of the country.
As for the track, it is a right-handed oval which is on the short-side – just one thousand three hundred metres in circumference and only about forty feet wide. Like many tracks, this has an inclined finishing straight.
Mauritius only gained independence in the late 1960s and it was at this venue that the formalities were completed. This included the hoisting of the national flag to replace the Union Jack.
Racing takes place here from March to early December and you can expect tens of thousands of spectators to turn up on a racing day. The crowd will not just be made up of local people, as the Champ de Mars Racecourse attracts visitors from all over the world. The locals here are racing fanatics and it is the most popular sport in the whole country.
Prior to the building of the race track, the French used this area for military purposes. In fact, one of the main reasons for building the facility was to reconcile the French with the new British administration. There was much bad feeling between the French and the British, after years of conflict in the Indian Ocean. It helped greatly that Sir Robert Farquhar had married a French woman and she was an active supporter of the project.
