Seventh Heaven (IRE)

Age: 4 (Foaled March 29th, 2013)

Sex: Bay Filly

Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – La Traviata (USA) (Johannesburg (USA))

Trainer: A P O’Brien

Owner: Mr D Smith, Mrs J Magnier, Mr M Tabor

Won the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, taking the prize scalp of stablemate Found, last August. Unsuccessful in 3 attempts, since then. Last seen at Meydan, when a very creditable runner-up behind Jack Hobbs in the Sheema Classic.

Across The Stars (IRE)

Age: 4 (Foaled March 28th, 2013)

Sex: Bay Colt

Breeding: Sea The Stars (IRE) – Victoria Cross (IRE) (Mark of Esteem (IRE))

Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute

Owner: Mr Saeed Suhail

Looked out of his depth, in the Epsom Derby, but then caused a minor upset when beating Aidan O’Brien’s Beacon Rock in the King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot. Raced keenly and then hung left, when 3rd in the Great Voltigeur Stakes and always looked held.

Galapiat

Age: 4 (Foaled February 10th, 2013)

Sex: Bay Colt

Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – Lady Jane Digby (Oasis Dream)

Trainer: M Johnston

Owner: Miss K Rausing

The Galileo colt is lightly raced and looks to have benefited from the switch to Mark Johnston’s yard. He comfortably won a decent handicap at Leicester and then an even better handicap contest at Epsom (both races took place in 2017) – unusual preparation for a race of this stature and it will be interesting to see if Johnston has chosen the right path for Andre Fabre’s former charge.

Race History

The race was first run in 1894, although the distance was a couple of furlongs shorter back then. 3-year-old horses were also allowed to run and this meant that there would often be horses taking part that would win a Classic in that same season.

The race distance was altered dramatically at the start of the 20th-century and was extended by a full 4 furlongs. It stayed that way until 1962, when the distance became 1m 4f – as it is today.

Coronation Cup Pointers

The Jockey Club Stakes takes place on the same day as the 2,000 Guineas and some of the better runners will often go on to contest the Coronation Cup, later in the season. There is a purse of around £100,000 and slightly more than half of this figure will go to the winning owner. The horses travel in a right-handed direction on the Rowley Mile course.

Standard weight is 9 stones exactly. G1 winners are penalised by 5 pounds and G2 winners face a 3 pounds penalty. Fillies and mares get a 3 pounds reduction.
