Rhododendron (IRE)

Age: 3 (Foaled February 11th, 2014)

Sex: Bay Filly

Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – Halfway To Heaven (IRE) (Pivotal)

Trainer: A P O’Brien

Owner: Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith

Arguably looked the best of what did not appear to be a vintage crop of 2-year-old fillies in 2016. Beat Hydrangea by just over 2 lengths, to take the Dubai Fillies Mile, a race in which Charlie Appleby’s Sobetsu was very disappointing. Rhododendron looks to be Aidan O’Brien’s main hope.

Roly Poly (USA)

Age: 3 (Foaled February 2nd, 2014)

Sex: Bay Filly

Breeding: War Front (USA) – Misty For Me (IRE) (Galileo (IRE))

Trainer: A P O’Brien

Owner: Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier

She narrowly won the Duke of Cambridge Stakes, at Headquarters, although you could have thrown a blanket over 4 horses at the finish (Magical Fire, Nations Alexander and Kilmah all finished within a length of her). Runner-up to stablemate Brave Anna, in the Cheveley Park Stakes as well, so she’s a serious player.

Eziyra (IRE)

Age: 3 (Foaled January 1st, 2014)

Sex: Chestnut Filly

Breeding: Teofilo (IRE) – Eytarna (IRE) (Dubai Destination (USA))

Trainer: D K Weld

Owner: H H Aga Khan

Dermot Weld’s inmate looks the biggest threat to Aidan O’Brien, following a brace of impressive outings at the Curragh. Eziyra lost by just a neck to Sea Of Grace (Flame Of Tara E.B.F. Stakes), before seeing-off the challenge of Grecian Light in the Weld Park Stakes. Swished her tail a little, when she came under pressure. There will be no shortage of that, when this race gets underway.

Others in contention include Promise To Be True, Hydrangea, Intricately and Sir Michael Stoute’s Spatial.

Race History

The race was first run in 1922, a year after the 2000 Guineas was inaugurated. You have to go a long way back to find the most successful jockey and trainer. Morny Wing and Hubert Hartigan hold the records, with 7 victories apiece.

Surprisingly, Aidan O’Brien has only won this race one one occasion in the last 5 years. That win came courtesy of Marvellous, in 2014.

Jet Setting won in 2016, for Richard Hannon. That horse has already become a broodmare and the same fate may-well await this year’s winner.
