The Sprint Cup is a 6f dash, with a purse of 4,000,000 HKD. Lucky Bubbles won this race in 2016 and returns to defend his crown. He’s still without a G1 victory and connections feel that a second Sprint Cup win would be a crucial stepping-stone to a triumph in elite company.
“He has run really well twice in G1s but has not won… But I am looking towards the big races coming up, I’m sure that he can win one soon. Last year, when he ran in this race, it was very different. He had not proven that he was a top sprinter. Now, he is but because he hasn’t won a G1, he carries the same weight as the others. If it is a straightforward race, then he should be hard to beat.”, said trainer Francis Lui this week.
Lucky Bubbles is up against Mr Stunning, Sun Jewellery, Dashing Fellow, Bad Boy and Lucky Year.
The Chairman’s Trophy
The Chairman’s Trophy also has 4,000,000 HKD up for grabs, although this contest is run over a mile.
John Moore’s superstar, Rapper Dragon, is expected to go-off as the hot-favourite but this will be no cake-walk. Reigning Horse Of the Year Werther and Helene Paragon are also expected to go into the stalls, making this a G1 clash in all but name.
“It’s a clash of the titans, no doubt,” Moore said. “The thing about Rapper Dragon is that he does so well in the stable, so an extra run won’t knock him around.
“He’s a different conformation to a horse like Werther. My alternative going towards the Champions Mile with him was to trial, but you can’t always be sure that a horse gets out a trial what you want him to get in terms of fitness.
“So it was better to give him a race to keep him ticking and, in saying that, he’s going to be extremely competitive in it too.”
John Size’s Contentment and the Anthony Cruz-trained Beauty Only are also in with a shout, although it’s not easy to make cases for Designs On Rome, Blazing Speed, Limitless, Horse Of Fortune or Circuit Land, against thoroughbreds of this quality.
