You can already bet on the 2017 Grosser Preis von Baden, which takes place at Baden-Baden Racecourse on Sunday September 3rd.
This year’s renewal looks relatively open and the likes of Iquitos, Lacazar, Savoir Vivre and Markus Klug’s Windstoss are all finding plenty of market-support.
Race Details
The Grosser Preis von Baden is a flat race and a prestigious G1 fixture, which is run over a mile and a half (left-handed). Horses must be at least three years of age, in order to take part.
The Grosser Preis von Baden is a historic contest that goes back to the middle part of the 19th-century. Back then, the race was run over a significantly longer distance of 2 miles. During the Second World War, the race had to be relocated to Hoppegarten and was not contested at all between 1945 and 1947.
Germany introduced a new race-grading system in the early 1970s and the Grosser Preis von Baden was immediately awarded G1 status. German companies have been very keen to sponsor it and both Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are among the major companies to have supported the event.
The race has a purse of well over £200,000. Significantly, it has been added to the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, meaning that the winner gets an automatic berth for the Breeders’ Cup Turf. There is a generous 4 kilo allowance for 3-year-olds, as well as a 1.5 kilo allowance for fillies and mares.
