There’s G3 action at Goodwood, on Sunday (4:30pm), with the 2017 renewal of the Supreme Stakes. Opal Tiara won this race for Richard Hannon, last year.
Hannon does not have a dog in the fight, this time around, so this looks a good opportunity for Charlie Hills’ Dutch Connection. The 5-year-old won the Lennox Stakes, here at Goodwood, just over a year ago.
Solomon’s Bay, winner of the Surrey Stakes at Epsom, is another that should go close. He’s trained by Roger Varian, as is Tomyris who won a Listed contest at York back in May. Others in contention include Salateen, Viscount Barfield and David Simcock’s Bless Him.

Race History
First held in 1981, the Supreme Stakes as a Group 3 race which is run over a distance of seven furlongs. The horses travel right-handed on the famous Goodwood turf and compete for a purse of £60,000.
The race used to be known as the Harroways Stakes and was named after a specific area of the Goodwood Estate. It has been known as the Supreme Stakes since the late-1980s, when it was also upgraded from just being a Listed race.
Top Jockeys
There are a trio of jockeys that have won the Supreme Stakes on three occasions. One of those riders, Richard Quinn, has also won twice on the same horse. His victorious partnerships with Sarab came in 1984 and 1986.
Frankie Dettori’s three Supreme Stakes victories include Decorated Hero in 1998. The horse had won the race the previous year, with a different jockey. Dettori is a true legend of the turf and his extraordinary list of major wins includes the 1,000 Guineas, the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Epsom Derby, the St. Leger, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Dubai World Cup, the Breeders’ Cup Classic, the Breeders’ Cup Turf and the Japan Cup.
Richard Hughes is the other jockey that has found his way into the winners enclosure on three occasions, first with Stronghold in 2006, then with Libranno in 2011 and then finally with Producer in 2012. John Gosden is the only trainer to have five Supreme Stakes victories under his belt, the first of which came with Anshan in 1990.
