Age: 6 (Foaled February 14th, 2011)
Sex: Bay Gelding
Breeding: Duke Of Marmalade (IRE) – Miss Brown To You (IRE) (Fasliyev (USA))
Trainer: M L W Bell
Owner: W J And T C O Gredley
Won this race last year, beating Sir Mark Prescott’s Pallasator by over a length. The 6-year-old’s campaign is now in full-swing and after easily winning the Henry II Stakes, he showed true grit to win the Ascot Gold Cup with Aidan O’Brien’s Order Of St George battling hard right up to the winning-post.
Order Of St George (IRE)
Age: 5 (Foaled February 22nd, 2012)
Sex: Bay Horse
Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – Another Storm (USA) (Gone West (USA))
Trainer: A P O’Brien
Owner: M Tabor,d Smith,mrsj Magnier,l Williams
There’s no doubting his ability, but this Galileo-sired 5-year-old has become expensive to back. He’s been a beaten odds-on favourite in 3 of his last 4 races and all 3 defeats have come on English soil (the victory came at Leopardstown, but only in Listed company). Order Of St George needs to show that he is still just as much a winner, as he was in 2015 and 2016.
Vazirabad (FR)
Age: 5 (Foaled March 8th, 2012)
Sex: Bay Gelding
Breeding: Manduro (GER) – Visorama (IRE) (Linamix (FR))
Trainer: A Royer De Dupre
Owner: H H Aga Khan
Sired by Manduro (Germany), this French gelding has an incedible record on the track. 10 victories from just 13 races is quite astonishing and he’s proven his worth in both France and the UAE. He’s yet to run in the UK, but has the ability to light-up Goodwood, should he start this race. Won the Dubai Gold Cup, back in March, with Big Orange a well-beaten 4th.
If none of these potential runners quite take your fancy, you’ll find long odds on the likes of Wicklow Brave, Dal Harraild, Stradivarius, US Army Ranger and Ralph Beckett’s Simple Verse.
Racing At Goodwood
Located just to the north of Chichester, West Sussex, the historic Goodwood racecourse is run by the Duke of Richmond. Goodwood holds several meetings, throughout the year, and is most famous for the Glorious Goodwood meet, in the summer.
Goodwood is regarded by many as being the most beautiful racecourse in England. What remains of a hill-fort, from the Iron-Age serves as part of the grandstand. As Goodwood is fairly close to the sea, fog can cause some problems, from time to time.
Sub-Courses
There are various sub-courses, within the entire racecourse. These have been tacked on, over the years, and include the Stewards’ Cup Course, the Gatwicke Course, the Craven Course, the Bentick Course and the Cup Course.
Only flat racing is held at Goodwood. However, the course is full of various undulations and sharp turns, which make it a real test for both horse and jockey.
The Goodwood Sussex Stakes
The Sussex Stakes is one of the major races, that are held at Goodwood racecourse. This race has been running since 1841 and it is a mile race, for horses aged 3 and up.
It used to be a sprinters’ contest, with a distance of just 6 furlongs. At that time, only 2-year-olds were permitted to run. This proved to be unpopular and there were many years where not one single horse was entered. Eventually, the Sussex Stakes was changed to being a mile race and open to older horses. This had an immediate impact and it wasn’t long before this was the most important race at Goodwood.
Frankel is the most well-known recent winner, enjoying victories in 2011 and 2012. Previous post-war winners include My Babu, Humble Duty, Kings Lake, First Island and Rock Of Gibraltar. The Gurkha landed the spoils, in 2016.
Sir Gordon Richards rode 8 Sussex Stakes winners, including Corpach, Combat and Agitator. The late Sir Henry Cecil trained 7 Sussex Stakes champions, which included Kris, Distant View and Frankel. We already have a live ante-post market, for this year’s renewal of the Sussex Stakes.
Other big Goodwood races include the Celebration Mile, the Lennox Stakes, the Richmond Stakes, the Stewards’ Cup, the Vintage Stakes, the Festival Stakes and the Nassau Stakes.
