Our 2017 Glorious Goodwood G2 Richmond Stakes betting market is now live! Horses in contention include Cardsharp, Headway, Nebo and Aidan O’Brien’s U S Navy Flag. Many of the horses running also featured in the July Stakes, at Headquarters last month (won by Cardsharp).
This event is a 6f sprint and it is only open to 2-year-old colts and geldings. It is run over a straight turf track. Inaugurated in 1887, the name of the race honours the Duke of Richmond.
Famous Winners
One of the top horses, to have won the Richmond Stake, is the Geoff Wragg-trained First Trump. He was out of a dam called Valika and sired by the largely unheralded Primo Dominie. This British chestnut stallion enjoyed a superb 2-year-old campaign, also winning the July Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes. He was named Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of 1993 and a great deal was expected of him in his Classic season.
Sadly, he was unable to take that form into the following campaign and was widely held to have been a disappointment as a 3-year-old. First Trump has performed reasonably well as a stud horse and has sired winners of the Flying Childers Stakes, the Summer Stakes and the Will Rogers Stakes.
Warning
To find the best-ever winner of the Richmond Stakes, you have to go back to 1987 and an American dark-bay stallion that was trained by Guy Harwood. Warning was sired by Known Fact, a winner of the Middle Park Stakes (1979), the Park Stakes (1980), the Crystal Mile (1980), the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (1980) and the Two Thousand Guineas Stakes (1980).
He was out of a dam called Tamerett and owned by Juddmonte Farms. Warning won over $1.5 million in prize money and his other major wins included the the Champagne Stakes (1987), the Sussex Stakes (1988), the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (1988) and the Queen Anne Stakes (1989).
Warning was given a Timeform rating of 136 and received many awards, such as the Top-rated European two-year-old colt (1987), the Top-rated European horse (1988) and the Timeform top-rated horse and Horse of the Year(1988).
He retired at the end of his four year-old campaign and went on to have a successful career at stud. Warning died in 2000, due to a heart complication.
