The G2 Queen’s Vase takes place on Friday, at Royal Ascot. It certainly looks like being a very-competitive encounter. Our ante-post market is already live and here are 3 horses that are likely to be in the shake-up…

Age: 3 (Foaled February 11th, 2014)
Sex: Chestnut Colt
Breeding: Motivator – Dissertation (FR) (Sillery (USA))
Trainer: M Johnston
Owner: Mr Abdulla Al Mansoori
Mark Johnston’s French colt has won 3 of his 5 races and shed his maiden tag on debut at Carlisle. He made all at Chelmsford City, on the polytrack back in November, before narrowly beating Alabaster in the Edinburgh Cup Handicap earlier this month.
Iron Mountain (USA)
Age: 3 (Foaled April 26th, 2014)
Sex: Bay Colt
Breeding: War Front (USA) – Along (IRE) (Smart Strike (CAN))
Trainer: A P O’Brien
Owner: Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith
Aidan O’Brien’s American colt is very-lightly raced, having only made his debut at Dundalk in October. That race was won by stablemate War Secretary and Iron Mountain (4th) didn’t put up much of a fight. He looked a different horse at The Curragh, in May though. With Ryan Moore on-board, he destroyed the field in a pretty-hot maiden and can be expected to progress further.
Count Octave
Age: 3 (Foaled April 21st, 2014)
Sex: Bay Colt
Breeding: Frankel – Honorine (IRE) (Mark of Esteem (IRE))
Trainer: A M Balding
Owner: Qatar Racing Limited
The Frankel colt, trained by Andrew Balding, is also still fairly wet behind the ears having only appeared 3 times on the track. 3rd on debut, in a race won by Monarchs Glen, Count Octave won next time out at Wolverhampton in what did look a very-modest contest. He was 5th of 8, in the G3 Chester Vase. Place chance, at least.
Others to consider include Belgravia, Venice Beach, Haripour and Roger Varian’s Defoe.
Race History
This historic encounter was first run in 1838. In recent years, it has twice been relegated to Listed status, but with European races for stayers now well and truly back in fashion it has been made a G2 event for the first time this year.
Notable winners include Mamool, Mahler, Estimate and Leading Light – one of 3 Aidan O’Brien horses to have won since 2013. Sword Fighter landed the spoils for the Irish trainer, last season.
