Age: 5 (Foaled February 21st, 2012)
Sex: Bay Horse
Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – Hveger (Danehill (USA))
Trainer: A P O’Brien
Owner: Mr D Smith, Mrs J Magnier, Mr M Tab
The winner of last year’s renewal was also first past the post in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. He beat both Flintshire and Found, in a true clash of the titans. Highland Reel trailed in last of 7, in the Dubai Sheema Classic, but reminded any doubters what a class act he really is when winning the Coronation Cup in commanding fashion at Epsom earlier this month. Keeps on answering all of his critics.
Jack Hobbs
Age: 5 (Foaled March 2nd, 2012)
Sex: Brown Horse
Breeding: Halling (USA) – Swain’s Gold (USA) (Swain (IRE))
Trainer: J H M Gosden
Owner: Godolphin & Partners
Easily won last season’s September Stakes, against opposition that was never likely to throw down a serious challenge, but was pulled-up in the Jockey Club Stakes when expected to pick-up another easy victory. Jack Hobbs raced a little gingerly, when 3rd in the Champion Stakes, but his defeat of Seventh Heaven in the Dubai Sheema Classic should have settled the nerves of connections and he’ll be a huge threat with a run.
Almanzor (FR)
Age: 4 (Foaled March 11th, 2013)
Sex: Bay Colt
Breeding: Wootton Bassett – (Maria’s Mon (USA))
Trainer: J C Rouget
Owner: Ecurie Antonio Caro
Jean-Claude Rouget’s charge is now unbeaten in his last 5 races, although 4 of these contests took place outside of the UK. Victories in the Guiche Stakes, Prix Du Jockey Club and Prix Gontaut-biron Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes were followed by a memorable win over both Found and Minding in the Irish Champion Stakes. The Wootton Bassett colt rounded-off an incredible campaign with another victory at Found’s expense, in the British Champions Stakes at Ascot. Will surely be the one to beat, should he start the race.
Race History
There are few more prestigious G1 flat races, held in the United Kingdom, than the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The race was first held in 1951 and it is currently sponsored by QIPCO. The runners travel 1.5 miles on a right-handed turf surface. Horses must be 3 years and up. There is a 3 pounds allowance for fillies and mares, while horses from the Southern Hemisphere receive 4 pounds.
Recent Winners
With a purse of well-over £1 million, this fixture always attracts an ultra-competitive field. Lets take a look at some of the recent champions.
Heavy rain led to soft ground in 2015 and this unfortunately saw a number of major contenders dropping-out including the all-conquering Golden Horn. Postponed beat Eagle Top by just a nose, in one of the most-exciting finishes of the past few years.
Taghrooda is a British bay filly and the 2014 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner. She was sired by the great Sea The Stars and out of a little-known dam called Ezima. She was bred by Shadwell Stud, is owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum and trained by John Gosden. 2014 was a fantastic year for Taghrooda, who also won the Pretty Polly Stakes and the Epsom Oaks.
In 2013, the winner was a horse called Novellist, a horse sired by Monsun. This Andreas Wohler-trained horse was trained in Germany and has also won the Frühjahrs Dreijährigen-Preis (2012), the Union-Rennen (2012), the Gran Premio del Jockey Club (2012), the Grosser Preis der Badischen Unternehmen (2013), the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2013) and the Grosser Preis von Baden (2013).
The Lomitas-sired Danedream was the 2012 Champion. The German raider was trained by Peter Schiergen and her owners are Gestüt Burg Eberstein & Teruya Yoshida. The bay mare was foaled in 2008 and was named European Champion 3-year-old Filly (2011) and German Horse of the Year (2011, 2012).
She is a winner of the Oaks d’Italia (2011), the Grosser Preis von Berlin (2011), the Grosser Preis von Baden (2011, 2012), the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2011) and the Grosser Preis der Badischen Unternehmen (2012).
Nathaniel won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2011. Owned by Lady Rothschild and trained by John Gosden, this Irish bay stallion was piloted to victory by William Buick. Nathaniel also won the King Edward VII Stakes in 2011 and the Eclipse Stakes in 2012.
