Still racing competitively, at the highest level, although it is now over 2 years since thhe 8-year-old won a race. He was runner-up in the Cleeve Hurdle though, finishing well-ahead of Ballyoptic and finished a creditable 4th in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.
The New One
Age: 9 (Foaled February 23rd, 2008)
Sex: Bay Gelding
Breeding: King’s Theatre (IRE) – Thuringe (FR) (Turgeon (USA))
Trainer: N A Twiston-Davies
Owner: S Such & Cg Paletta
The King’s Theatre gelding was once the next big thing, but many pundits have now come to the conclusion that he just isn’t quite good enough. Beat a small field to win the Champion Hurdle Trial, at Haydock, but never a real threat in the Champion Hurdle itself (finished 5th and over 10 lengths behind the winner, Buveur D’air. Still a decent each-way shout, though.
Supasundae
Age: 7 (Foaled January 31st, 2010)
Sex: Bay Gelding
Breeding: Galileo (IRE) – Distinctive Look (IRE) (Danehill (USA))
Trainer: Mrs J Harrington
Owner: Ann & Alan Potts Partnership
Victory in the Coral Cup (Cheltenham) puts Jessica Harrington’s charge very much in the reckoning and it’s worth remembering that Supersundae beat Monksland by 6.5 lengths, at Punchestown on New-Year’s-Eve, despite being 4lbs worse-off. The 7-year-old could well be the value-bet, on Saturday.
Other horses that are being backed include Yanworth, Unowhatimeanharry, Apple’s Jade, Jezki and Snow Falcon.
Race History
The Liverpool Hurdle was first run in 1974, although it was initially held at Ascot and called the Long Dustance Hurdle. The move to Aintree (and change of name) only happened in 2004, while G1 status was finally awarded in 2010.
Big Buck’s used to dominate this contest, winning in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. It’s a race in which previous winners must be taken very seriously. Whisper, Mighty Man and Gaye Brief all won twice, although Thistlecrack’s injury means the 2016 Champion won’t be attempting to secure a Liverpool Hurdle double on Saturday.
The leading jockey is Peter Scudamore, who enjoyed wins on-board Gaye Chance (1982), Bajan Sunshine (1985), Gaye Brief (1986), Mrs Muck (1987) and Pragada (1992).
Martin Pipe (senior) is top trainer, also with a quintet of victories – Pragada (1992), Sweet Glow (1994), Galant Moss (1999), Maid Equal (2001) and Deano’s Beeno (2003).
